Located in the vibrant suburb of Malvern East, just a short walk from Chadstone Shopping Centre, Webster House is a thoughtful blend of past and present. Our clients approached us with a unique challenge—to design a home that is minimalist and modern yet evokes a sense of nostalgia.
Balancing aesthetics with budget, we drew inspiration from the simplicity of Japanese architecture, seamlessly merging it with the warmth and character of Australian Mid-Century Modern design. The result is a home that feels both refined and inviting, textured yet effortlessly functional.
A key feature of Webster House is the use of breeze blocks, which serve as privacy screening while filtering the harsh sunlight that would otherwise penetrate deep into the home’s interior. This element became a defining design language throughout the project, offering both practicality and sculptural beauty.
To enhance natural light and create a sense of openness, we incorporated popped-up roof structures and clerestory windows, allowing indirect sunlight to reach deeper into the home. Skylights were strategically placed in various areas, introducing soft, filtered light while casting dramatic shadows on textured concrete walls throughout the day.
Materiality played a crucial role in defining the character of the house. We embraced texture and color, layering contrasting materials to create visual interest and warmth. Coloured crazy paving meets timber floors, delineating spaces while adding depth and personality. Textured finishes stand boldly against soft surfaces, offering a rich sensory experience.
Throughout the design, steel detailing brings a contemporary edge, while mid-century-inspired timber tones and intricate woodwork add warmth and nostalgia. The result is a modern yet soulful home, where light, texture, and materiality work together to craft a timeless living experience.
