MODERN HOUSE IN WHEELERS HILL
COURTYARD HOUSE

Location : Wheelers Hill, Victoria, Australia

Type : Single Family House

Status : in-Progress | 2026

Courtyards House is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional courtyard dwelling, reimagined through a modern architectural language. The project emerged from the clients’ vision for a home organised around a series of courtyards, informed by their Asian cultural background and a deep appreciation for inward‑looking living environments.

Our design process began with extensive research into historic Chinese and Japanese courtyard houses—typologies that prioritise sequence, enclosure, landscape, and moments of pause. Rather than replicating these precedents, the intent was to reinterpret their spatial principles in a distinctly modern way, translating tradition into a contemporary residential architecture that feels calm, layered, and experiential.

The house is approached through two distinct entrances. The first is conceived as a gateway rather than a front door—an intentional threshold that draws visitors into a landscaped garden inspired by Chinese and Japanese traditions. Water features, rocks, and carefully scaled planting create a meditative arrival sequence, slowing movement and establishing a sense of retreat from the street. This courtyard then leads naturally to the main entrance of the house.

Inside, a light‑filled lobby forms the heart of the home. Warm mid‑toned joinery, integrated water elements, and sculptural moments create a welcoming yet restrained atmosphere. From this central space, the house unfolds around a series of internal courtyards, with nearly all major rooms oriented inward toward landscape. These courtyards are not decorative; they are active spatial devices that shape views, light, ventilation, and daily experience.

The site’s significant fall from back to front became a key design driver. Rather than resisting the topography, the house cascades across the land through a sequence of split levels. Carefully considered transitions ensure fluid movement between levels, creating visual connections and spatial continuity while subtly differentiating zones within the home.

The ground level accommodates an extensive program, including two living areas, two kitchens, and two dining spaces, supporting both everyday family life and larger gatherings. A guest master suite, gym, games room, laundry, and a dedicated wellness zone are also located on this level. The covered pool area is conceived as an extension of the living spaces, complete with a pool lounge, sauna, spa, and additional wellbeing amenities, reinforcing the home’s focus on retreat and longevity.

The upper level contains a more private family domain, comprising a central living area, a children’s study, the main master suite, and four additional bedrooms serviced by three bathrooms. Wherever possible, bedrooms and living spaces are oriented toward landscaped areas or the central courtyard, ensuring consistent visual connection to nature throughout the house.

Courtyards House is defined by sequence, contrast, and discovery. Moving through the home reveals a series of moments—compressed and open, light and shadow, quiet and expressive—each carefully choreographed. The result is a residence that balances cultural reference with contemporary living, offering a deeply personal, inward‑focused home shaped by landscape, light, and spatial experience.
