Perched on a sloping site in the prestigious Wheelers Hill precinct of Melbourne, Casa Levitas is a bold architectural statement that redefines hillside living. With a built-up area of 1,500 sqm, the residence draws its identity from the natural topography, using the fall of the land not as a constraint but as a generative force. The result is a home that appears to hover gracefully above the landscape, true to its name—Levitas, the Latin word for lightness.
Central to the design is the expressive use of concrete, not just as a material but as a sculptural medium. Its raw strength and textural honesty are celebrated throughout the structure, forming the architectural backbone of the house. Concrete detailing is meticulously carried across all three levels, providing a robust, monolithic presence that contrasts with carefully chosen soft materials—rich timber finishes, expansive glazing, and tactile fabrics—creating a refined balance between mass and delicacy.
The home unfolds over three levels. The basement is a subterranean retreat housing a 10-car garage, gym, private theatre, games zone, and a temperature-controlled wine cellar—an enclave of leisure and luxury.
The ground floor is split into two wings—public and private—orchestrated around layered spatial planning that ensures every room captures views of the valley, either directly or through adjacent spaces. Large, strategically placed glazing frames these vistas while inviting natural light deep into the interior. A series of water features weave through the ground floor plan, enhancing the sensory experience and offering tranquil visual anchors to the interior spaces. This level also hosts generously scaled entertaining zones, two gourmet kitchens, multiple living areas, and outdoor entertainment terraces that dissolve the boundary between built form and nature.
The first floor accommodates a private sanctuary of bedrooms, each complete with ensuites and walk-in robes. A central family lounge anchors this level, while the use of double-height voids throughout the design injects dramatic verticality and an ever-changing play of light and shadow, enriching the spatial experience.
