SHADOW HOUSE

Location : Sabah Salem, Kuwait

Type : Single Family House

Status : Completed | 2015

Shadow House gets its name from its central artistic concept: the interplay of light and shadow. Designed to create dynamic patterns throughout the day, both internal and external spaces, as well as facades, are crafted to cast shadows using natural and artificial light. Light wells enhance this effect, bringing exterior light inside during the day and transforming into light boxes at night, adding a unique dimension to the user experience.

The house features simple textures and materials, such as lime plaster and matte stone, that complement and enhance the shadow effects without overpowering them. The U-shaped design allocates 40% of the land to a central garden, which serves as a focal point for residents and visitors alike. This garden not only provides light and natural ventilation to all internal spaces but also offers beautiful views from every level.

A standout feature is the office space overlooking the garden. It appears to float, due to the play of light and shadow at its base, and is separated from the main house by wrap-around glass, creating an exciting and visually appealing experience. The internal pool, adorned with simple and elegant materials, culminates in a glass cubic box, making the space dynamic through varying light intensity and shadow movement.
