Loma Linda House is a contemporary family residence shaped by site complexity, restraint, and a desire for architecture that feels timeless rather than trend-driven.
Located on an irregularly shaped allotment in Balwyn North, the site widens toward the street and narrows at the rear, with a gentle fall from back to front. Rather than treating these conditions as limitations, the design embraces them as opportunities. The natural slope is used to discreetly accommodate a basement garage and supporting facilities, allowing the main living levels to sit comfortably within the landscape while maintaining a strong, grounded street presence.
The architecture is defined by a clear horizontal composition, unified by a softly curved upper form that moderates scale and brings a sense of calm to the frontage. Light-toned masonry and perforated brick screens are employed to provide privacy, articulate the massing, and introduce subtle texture without visual heaviness. These brick screens act as both functional elements and refined architectural accents, filtering light and views while adding depth and detail to the façade.
A consistent language of round steel columns is used throughout the project. These slender elements perform multiple roles — supporting the structure, concealing downpipes, and establishing a cohesive aesthetic rhythm. Their repetition reinforces the architectural order while contributing to the softness and elegance of the overall composition.
Internally, the home is organised around a central landscaped courtyard and pool, forming the heart of the house. Living spaces open directly onto this protected outdoor room, allowing daily life to unfold around light, water, and greenery. The courtyard also acts as a climatic moderator, bringing daylight deep into the plan while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties.
The client brief called for a modern yet timeless home — calm, luxurious, and spacious without relying on bold gestures or strong colour accents. In response, the material palette is deliberately restrained. Pale masonry, refined concrete, soft timber finishes, and neutral surfaces are layered carefully to enhance spatial quality rather than dominate it. Luxury is expressed through proportion, light, and craftsmanship rather than excess or ornamentation.
Movement and spatial experience are prioritised over material-driven architecture. Moments of compression and release, framed views, and transitions between interior and exterior define the way the house is experienced. Circulation paths pass through landscaped edges and shaded colonnades, encouraging a slow, intuitive progression through the home.
Private spaces, including the bedrooms, are conceived as quiet retreats. Integrated joinery, soft natural light, and minimal detailing allow the architecture to recede, creating spaces that feel restful, enduring, and deeply considered.
Loma Linda House reflects ENCLAVE’s approach to residential architecture: responsive to site, disciplined in form, and focused on creating timeless spaces shaped by light, movement, and everyday living.
